With less than three weeks until Richmond’s general election day and advanced polls opening as early as Saturday, school trustee candidates have responded to a survey questionnaire illuminating their views on some of the election’s most contentious topics.

Put together by the Richmond Teachers’ Association, the survey begins by asking candidates to state if they support the implementation of the newly passed sexual orientation and gender identity policy (SOGI) with a simple “yes” or “no.” Eighteen candidates responded with a “yes,” five responded “no,” and three candidates did not respond with either a “yes” or a “no.”

Other topics covered in the survey included diversity, challenges facing the school district, the collective agreement with teachers and recruitment. For these questions, candidates were given the opportunity to expand on their positions.

Following the release of this survey, the Richmond Teachers’ Association plans to host an all-candidates meeting on Thursday, Oct. 4 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m, at J.N. Burnett Secondary. All candidates except Andrea Gong-Quinn are expected to attend.
