Richmond’s four Rotary clubs are joining forces for the first time, to raise funds for the disaster-stricken Bahamas in the wake of Hurricane Dorian.
Led by the Rotary Club of Steveston – and its past president and current board member Rick Duff – the clubs are hosting a 1K Walk or Bike for Bahamas Hurricane Relief on Saturday, Sept. 21 at Garry Point Park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
As well as collecting donations to take part, Rotary volunteers from the Steveston, Richmond Rotary, Richmond Sunset Club and Richmond Sunrise clubs will be offering a barbecue hotdog lunch for a minimum $5 donation.
“I knew all about the devastation in the Bahamas and wanted to do something to help,” said Duff.
“As soon as I brought up the idea, everyone else jumped in. Rotary International does a lot of great stuff around the world and our group did a lot when the tsunami hit Japan six years ago.
“Richmond is full of generous people and when our president, Bill McEwan, got a hold of the other three Rotary clubs and they were all over it.
“We’ve taken part together in little events, but this would likely be the biggest collaboration between the clubs.”
Duff said they are currently looking for sponsors for the lunch and advertising.
