The Richmond Community Foundation (RCF) announced they are providing financial support to local charities that have been helping the vulnerable populations affected by COVID-19.

The foundation will be distributing a total of $363,000, funded through the Government of Canada's Emergency Community Support Fund (ECSF), to various and eligible charities by the foundation to help with resources, including covering staff or resource needs, purchasing equipment and more.

“In these uniquely challenging times, local charitable organizations have stepped up like never before,” said Ed Gavsie, executive director of RCF.

“Through this historic initiative, the foundation will support their inspiring work, helping to ensure that Richmond’s most vulnerable residents remain safe and healthy.”

Eligible charities are those running projects at the community level and are serving the vulnerable populations.

The ECSF was first announced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on April 21 as part of a series of emergency response measures for COVID-19.

RCF was one of 150 local communication foundations across Canada selected to take part in this national effort while partnering with Community Foundations of Canada, United Way Centraide Canada and the Canadian Red Cross.

“Across Richmond, charitable organizations are expanding existing services or developing new ones to meet the needs of children, seniors, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups,” said Dave Frank, chair of the Richmond Community Foundation.

“We’re committed to supporting these local response efforts so that, together as a community, we can overcome COVID-19.”

Applications are now being accepted with funding expected to be issues on an ongoing basis until July 27.

The Richmond Community Foundation was established in 1990, and manages nearly 50 funds, from which it awards grants and scholarships to local students and non-profit organizations.
