Richmond’s William Cook Elementary teachers didn’t need to brown bag it on Thursday. Rather, they were treated to a load of pizza -- all individually packaged in accordance with safe handling in light of COVID.

“I saw on the news that teachers have been working extremely hard to keep delivering classes in tough conditions,” said Richmond powerlifting champion Sumeet Sharma, the man who bought and delivered the lunchtime treat.

“There are so many changes happening every day and they are trying their best. I wanted to acknowledge that and show our gratitude to them.”

Sharma also hopes his behaviour could inspire more people to offer help, such as surprising neighbours with treats, buying a homeless person a meal or just calling an old friend.

Donating food to teachers at Cook is just the start, said Sharma, adding he and his family hope to help more school teachers in the coming weeks.

Sharma was recently recognized for his community work winning the award for Athlete of the Year by Drishti Magazine, a South Asian lifestyle magazine launched in 2010. He will be receiving the award on Nov. 1 in Vancouver.
