McMath Secondary School alumna and singer, Becca Wade, is next in line to perform at the Concerts in the Park series Wednesday evening.

Wade, who was once a carrier for the Richmond News, began her music career at the Richmond Youth Honour Choir.

She took musical composition classes at McMath and pursued music through her work as an early childhood educator after graduation.

After being encouraged to try out open mic nights, Wade began teaching herself to play the ukulele so that she could “accompany (herself) singing and not rely on another musician for the chords.”

“I attended open mic nights every week for a year, meeting lots of new musicians in the area, each pushing me to be a better vocalist and musician myself,” Wade said.

Along with another McMath graduate, Alana Zerbe, they formed a musical duo named the Ukuladies of Lulu Island.

“With baritone and tenor ukuleles, alto and soprano voices, we were able to make a unique sound full of soft harmonies.”

Wade is also a part of Whiskey Karma, an eight-piece country band that performs throughout the Lower Mainland including at the Richmond night market.

Some of her favourite artists to cover are the Beatles, Coldplay, Shania Twain and Ingrid Michaelson.

She describes her music style as “vocalistic” and says the audience can expect “a range of well-known songs, performed in a unique way that emphasizes a strong vocal melody.”

“Music is something that I will always have as part of my life, whether it be with children, on a main stage, or busking on the boardwalk,” Wade added.

The concert starts at 6:30 at Garden City Park. Make sure to bring your own blankets and picnic chairs.
