An art and academic studio in Steveston is helping give children an appreciation for visual arts while learning the fundamentals of the English language in a fun and artistic environment.

Language Arts Base (LAB) also offers weekly classes and workshops for adults, as well as a shop that sells handmade greeting cards by Papelu Studio andfeatures graphic design by Carmen Li.

“LAB is a place for people of all ages to come in and learn, or create something. Whether it be art, or for kids to say their first word or paint their first painting,” says LAB’s founder Jessica Pang.

Pang is a University of British Columbia graduate who moved to Hong Kong following her studies to open a LAB studio which ran successfully for several years before returning to her hometown of Vancouver to launch her new studio.

LAB recently moved into its new Steveston location, which features a bigger, more airy space that allows for appropriate social distancing during classes and workshops.

Not only do children improve their language skills at LAB, they also get a chance to tap into their own hidden artistic talents.

“When you see especially young students that complete a work of art, they’re so happy, they want to tell everyone about it and it brings a light out in them,” Pang says.

“Little moments like that make art such an important thing and it should be accessible to everyone and everybody.”

Weekly classes and workshops include everything from painting to sculpture and are available on weekends and after school. Anyone is welcome to visit the studio to see the local art and browse the shop. LAB is also open to any last-minute inquiries for holding events and workshops.
