Wildcats battle their way back to provincials

McMath off to "AAA" tourney this week while McRoberts narrowly missed "AA" berth

McMath Wildcats will be the city’s lone representative at this week’s respective B.C. Boys Soccer Championships in Burnaby.

The Steveston school clutched up to win a pair of games to grab the third and final berth in the “AAA” Zone playoffs.

The Wildcats opened with a 1-0 win over Killarney but then fell to Vancouver College in the semi-finals.

That forced them in a do-or-die-scenario with three other teams for the remaining provincial berth.

McMath rolled to a 5-0 win over Eric Hamber, then locked up its trip to Burnaby with a 6-1 romp of Churchill.

The 16-team tournament gets underway on Thursday with the Wildcats in a pool group that includes Vancouver Island champion Oak Bay, Fraser Valley powerhouse LA Matheson and North Peace. The first place team will advance directly to Friday afternoon’s semi-finals.

The action will conclude at the Burnaby West Sports Complex on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the McRoberts Strikers nearly made it two straight trips to the B.C. “AA” Championships which kickoff today.

The Strikers opened the zone playoffs with a 4-3 win over Point Grey before a tough 1-0 defeat to eventual champion Notre Dame.

That set-up and all-Richmond consolation battle with McNair and McRoberts came through with a 2-0 triumph for their first victory in three tries this season against their nearby rival.

The Strikers also got the help they needed when Gladstone lost to Notre Dame in the final, meaning they were still alive in their quest to earn the second zone berth. However, the Vancouver school prevailed in what was the teams’ third game in as many days.
