Months of hard work and preparation have paved the way for the Richmond Jets Minor Hockey Association to host its first official event on Saturday.

An Opening Day celebration for the 2018-19 season will take place from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and will feature a wide-range of activities on the ice, in the concourse area and parking lot at the Richmond Centre.

Highlights include the new Jets jerseys being presented to the association’s Hockey 1-4 players thanks to the sponsorship efforts of Cowell Motors. Official Jets apparel will also be on sale, including shirts, caps and toques.

Opening Day is part of an action-packed inaugural season that will include many of the popular events run by the former Richmond Minor and Seafair associations.

The 16th annual Seafair Icebreaker Rep Tournament is slated for Thanksgiving Weekend next month and Richmond Minor’s 38th annual Bantam and Midget International Tournament is slated for Dec. 26-28.

Programs such as First Shift and Intro Hockey for new players are also up-and-running.

The city’s two associations agreed to come together after a merger committee was formed in 2016 and membership voted for approval by over a 60 percent margin last October. It gives Richmond the largest minor hockey association in Pacific Coast Amateur.
