Some Richmond curlers will be in the provincial capital over the holiday season for the 2020 B.C. Junior Championships starting on Saturday.

Team Tao is among the eight rinks to qualify in the junior men’s division. The rink features players from the Richmond Curling Club, Vancouver and Port Moody with Johnson Tao as the skip, along with Toby Mills (third), Connor Kent (second) and Michael Nunn (lead). The boys are coached by Richmond’s Vic Shimzu.

They clinched their trip to Victoria at the Lower Mainland Playdowns in Chilliwack — defeating Team Reed 8-3 for the third.

Also competing in Chilliwack was Richmond’s Brayden Carpenter — skipping a rink from the Tunnel Town Curling Club that earned the second provincial qualifier spot.

The provincials schedule will four days of round-robin action with the top four teams advancing to the semi-finals on New Year’s Day. The men and women’s final take place on Jan. 2 with all the action at the Victoria Curling Club.

It’s an exciting year for B.C. teams with the 2020 Canadian Junior Championships taking place in Langley — Jan. 18-26.
