McNair graduates Carter Popoff and Erin Reid were among 144 UBC student-athletes honoured for their outstanding achievements in the classroom at the 2018-19 Academic All-Canadian Breakfast.

Held at a packed Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre, the event celebrated the incredible work of UBC Thunderbirds who achieved an academic

standing of 80 percent or better during the 2017-18 academic year.

Hosted by UBC President & Vice-Chancellor Santa J. Ono, deans and varsity athletics staff were also on hand to recognize these outstanding individuals.

Popoff, an arts student, is now in his third-season as a member of the Thunderbirds men’s hockey team. The Richmond Minor product enjoyed an outstanding campaign with the Richmond Sockeyes before playing four seasons in the Western Hockey League with the Vancouver Giants.

Reid, who is studying kinesiology, plays catcher/utility for the UBC women’s softball team. She was a standout coming through the Richmond Islanders rep program.

U SPORTS (formerly CIS) first began recognizing academic All-Canadians in 1988, but 15 years ago UBC began applying the standard to all varsity athletes and the Academic All-Canadian Breakfast was born. Since then, every fall the university proudly celebrates these incredible student-athletes for the leaders they are both inside and out of the classroom.
