Kumon Math and Reading Centre of Richmond-West's unique approach to learning has helped shape the journeys of three local students, instilling confidence, discipline and critical thinking that propelled them to top universities and beyond. Their stories speak to how Kumon West Richmond's multi-level programs go far beyond traditional tutoring, equipping students with the tools to excel in both academics and life.

Success isn’t just about grades–it’s also about the habits and skills built along the way. For these three students, Kumon West Richmond’s multi-level programs provided more than just extra math and reading practice; it was the foundation for lifelong learning. Through repetition, consistency and self-discipline, they developed the ability to study independently. Their stories show how a widely recognized program can still offer deeply personal growth, transforming education into a journey of personal achievement.

From timid to fast tracking

Meet Sofia, a student in Grade 12 who’s about to make her way to Yale University with plans to study biology to pursue medical school. She started at Kumon West Richmond when she was four years old and continued with the program for 11 years.

“I remember I used to be really timid when I was younger,” says Sofia, reflecting on her earlier days at the centre. Over time, her trust in the long-term teachers and new friendships helped her develop confidence in a safe learning environment.

“It also taught me discipline and consistency and how even doing two pages a day can just make you progress so fast,” adds Sofia. Now, not only has she entered honours streams, but she also carries these skills to her track and field life.

Systematic thinking inspires life-long passion

Tony, another former Kumon West Richmond student, credits the centre for his success. A first-year mathematics of computation undergrad at UCLA, Tony says Kumon helped him discover his passion for math.

“I soon realized the importance of repetition: it made math feel more automatic and second nature,” says Tony. “In retrospect, I could tell what I learned was fundamental for things later on.”

He attributes his long-term academic success to being trained to think systematically while learning from teachers who never shied away from helping students. The focus and time management then carried over to his extracurriculars, too.

“What kept me coming back was seeing the progress I was making and how fast I was advancing through each level. This head start allowed me to dive into theoretical problems I’m interested in, specifically linear algebra, analysis and optimization.”

An early start with a centre that cares

Finally, we meet Oliver, a Grade 6 student who has been with Kumon West Richmond for seven years now.  While still on his mastery-based learning journey, he shares similar praise for the program as Sofia and Tony.

“My skills have improved and I don’t think of it as intense as I thought when I was very young,” says Oliver. “With my Kumon teachers’ supportive help, I was able to feel more confident doing math contests.”

The gentle support and guidance from these trusted teachers earned a heartfelt thanks from all three students. While they’ve moved on to new stages in life, the lasting relationships they built with their teachers continue to make Kumon West Richmond an integral part of the community’s success.
