Explore the outdoors without heading out of town

You’ll discover a whole new world of adventure as you dive deeper into the culture and character of this vibrant city we call home

This weekend, travel afar with outdoor experiences that are close to home in Richmond—an exciting city with diverse culture and character ready to explore.

First, start your day off with an energizing breakfast.

You can choose from the healthy options available at Goodbowl for something savoury and if your sweet tooth has a craving, checkout Damien’s Belgian Waffles—ready to grab and go.

For a peaceful morning, head over to Paulik Park to slow down and breathe in the natural world in a 1.5-acre perennial garden that is bursting with botanicals. Step out on walking trails in a woodland oasis of trees and discover public art nestled throughout the park.

You can also explore the green heart of Richmond’s city centre at Minoru Park. Walk around the peaceful lakes with floral displays and towering willows and take some photos at the lovely Historic Minoru Chapel and Pierrefonds Garden. If you’re seeking something active to do, come prepared to play with tennis courts, bowling greens, a basketball court and more.

Recharge with a hot beverage from Rocanini Coffee Roasters or Steveston Coffee Company for a local taste of Richmond’s thriving coffee scene.

Set sail from Steveston on whale watching expeditions and eco-tours for a chance to spot sea lions, herons, eagles, a pod of black-and-white orcas, or even majestic humpback whales. Most tours embark at noon and reservations are encouraged.

Back on land, you can rent a bike and explore the city’s 80 kilometers of trails—Steveston is surrounded by pathways perfect for walking, biking and taking in breathtaking water and mountain views.

Pick up lunch at local favourites—Pajo’s or Win Win Chick-N—and unwind at Garry Point Park where you can see Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands on a clear day. A popular destination for birders, you’re certain to witness wildlife. Take a moment of calm to admire the unique Japanese horticulture blooming in the Kuno Garden.

Afterwards be sure to explore Fisherman’s Wharf, and visit Richmond’s two National Historic Sites - the Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site and The Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site - to relive the stories of the past that this fishing village still tells today.

End the day with dinner on the patio at Blue Canoe Waterfront Restaurant and take in the waves of atmosphere that waterfront dining has to offer. Or, check out Britannia Brewing Company for village charm, lively atmosphere and great food.

Finally, make your short journey home and rest up from your full day outside.

Wake up the next morning and do it all again—you’ll discover a whole new world of adventure as you dive deeper into the culture and character of this vibrant city we call home.
