Parents always hope their children achieve their maximum scholastic ambitions in their chosen school setting, but everybody learns in different ways, and at different paces.

Whether your child is receiving their primary or secondary education in public, private schools or a conventional learning centre, there's always some sort of framework to follow, and those guidelines are almost always inflexible. This is the crux of where kids can fall through the cracks in the traditional system, and where academic struggles can develop.

Since its inception in 2020, under the tutelage of founder and director Jessica Chan, The Learning Cloud offers flexible hours in a fun and non-traditional tutoring centre. They make an impact on students aged two-and-a half to high school by guiding them into their own individual selves through learning and play.

"We don't follow a specific curriculum at The Learning Cloud, instead we target the root of the problem for each individual student's needs," says Chan. "We only teach one-on-one tutoring, and work on those shortcomings with step-by-step techniques for lasting results."

They have a tight unit of 15 educators with various backgrounds, who are relatable, young, fun and personable, and have a true connection with the students' parents.

"Parents love the feedback they get from the educators after every class," says Chan. "All our educators speak a second language to help break barriers for parents who cannot help with English."

"We work together with school teachers and look at report cards to bridge gaps and work along-side what is being learned and taught at school."

The variety of subjects taught, such as English, math, science, French as well as non-academic classes, like LEGO®, chess, and arts and crafts gives The Learning Cloud a hub and variety of classes applicable to their clients.

Here are three benefits of one-on-one tutoring

1. Boosting kids' confidence

Boosting their confidence level is imperative, especially in very young children, who don't know how to reach out for help.

"We make the environment very open so kids can be honest when they 'don't get it,' and we let them know it's okay," explains Chan. "We figure out the method and what's the best possible outcome for this child. We really push them, but give them lots of encouragement."

2. Teach good study habits

Kids develop bad study habits at a young age because most haven't been taught proper practices, which a tutor can instill.

"Students also don't know how to proofread their own work and it's a huge thing we do here," says Chan. "As young as kindergarten, we teach them to catch their mistakes before their educator does."

3. Build a strong foundation

Building a strong foundation of reading and writing, with grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary, will help your child achieve success.

"We aim to ensure their foundation is strong, whatever grade they're going into, and we want their transition to be seamless," says Chan. "When they understand what's being taught prior to being in class, they're more willing to speak up, whether raising their hand or sharing their ideas; it's great because this is a core section in their report card."

"Tutoring is not just for kids who struggle," says Chan. "I think having an outside educator is a tool to further the skills you already have. There's nothing wrong with bettering yourself in education or in that academic world."
