The Richmond Community Coalition said, via a news release, it will seek to ensure enhanced block watch and community policing programs. It floated the idea of a new "safe community advisory council" comprised of senior community stakeholders.

Coun. Ken Johnston cited crime statistics on thefts from auto, which are up 74 per cent to date in 2014.

When it comes to auto related crime, or property crime in general, Richmond (particularly West Richmond) has one of the lowest rates per capita in Metro Vancouver. See geographic data here.

RCC is proposing an annual town hall on community safety.

It also suggested a  "more efficient emergency communications system with parents in the event of serious security or lockdown situations at school."

It did not cite any incidents where children were ever at risk.

"We're not trying to scare people about crime in our community - we just want them to be more secure and make every effort to reduce crime," said Johnston, via a news release.
