Richmond City Council candidate Dr. Kristian von Schalburg. Oct. 2014

I am a scientist, husband and father. We reside in Steveston. I wish to take the lessons I have learned in business and academia and use them to serve the people of Richmond.

I am very interested in learning what issues are of the most concern to residents of Richmond and addressing those concerns. Only about 20 – 25% of eligible voters actually vote! How do we fix that? We need people to feel that their vote counts, that if something is wrong their council will actually listen and act.

Municipal government therefore needs to be inclusive and responsive. More public hearings are required and small stipends may be needed to attract more people to serve on advisory committees. Perhaps the incoming council should consider referenda combining issues like Chinese-only signage, and how to approach the Minoru Park facility and Garden City Lands. Some kind of forum is required so all residents feel they have a voice.

Councillors should work for the citizens of Richmond, not themselves. I promise you that I will serve you as a full-time representative, that I will listen to each and every side of all issues and make balanced and informed decisions on your behalf.
