Bergman: Curb foreign home ownership, save farms, enforce English

Janos Bergman noted in a news release he wants to lobby all levels of government “for laws and/or bylaws that will prevent non-residents/foreigners from buying multiple residential properties for investment purposes.”

He says this is done in other countries and not doing so is part of the reason why housing prices are so high in Richmond.

Bergman also opposes any oil and coal shipments along the Fraser River.

“I stand for protecting our agricultural lands,” said Bergman.

Bergman is also a strong advocate of a sign bylaw mandating English or French on business signs. He notes similar bylaws are passed elsewhere in Canada and have withstood challenges from business owners.

“Simply put, a lack of English on signs is disrespectful to the great many of us who do not read Chinese,” said Bergman, who is ethnically Hungarian and speaks five languages.

Bergman’s platform also includes expanded Canada Line service such as more trains and greater frequency.

Bergman also wants to restrict night flights to cut down on noise pollution.

Bergman said he is not taking campaign donations.

“If I can get elected on a campaign budget of $200, just imagine what I will do to keep costs down with the city’s budget,” he said.
