YVR taxis don't like to take Richmond fares

The Editor,

Recently, my sister, niece and I caught a cab from the taxi stand at YVR.

The cab driver loaded our baggage into the trunk and was quite cordial until we got in and gave him the address.

As soon as he was told it was in Richmond, we were subjected to a tirade, beginning with, "I don't like picking up Chinese because they live in Richmond."

My sister informed him we weren't Chinese, but that wasn't the point. He didn't like the short fares to any place in Richmond.

I requested he take us back so we could get another driver, but he said it was too late - he would have to line up for hours to get to the front of the line again.

I had no desire to converse with him, but had to give him directions. Our fare was $26.25 and I gave him $27 as I didn't have the exact amount. He didn't offer change, and I didn't ask as I just wanted him gone.

My children have worked in the service industry so my family usually tips generously, but there was absolutely no way this man deserved it.

As we discussed the incident, my sister reminded me that she had had a similar experience when getting to a nearby hotel from YVR.

The first cab driver drove away when he learned their destination was Richmond.

There must be others in Richmond who have been subjected to rude behaviour when taking a cab from the airport. I am requesting that the airport authority look into this and work on a solution, perhaps a separate line for taxis willing to take Richmond fares.

I will contact the cab company, YVR airport, the B.C. government and our local newspapers regarding the appalling behaviour of the driver.
