Christopher Yuen is clearly frustrated with the status quo, as are many other Canadians. We have governments who talk about strong environmental policies and protections but fail to deliver. The good news is all Canadians have a choice that will give them a stronger voice in government to continue building a sustainable and prosperous future for them and their children.
As recent elections have demonstrated, we are at the beginning of a new era and new economy.
Elizabeth May was not only voted into office as Canada's first Green Party MP in 2011 but has also recently been recognized by her peers with the Parliamentarian of the Year award. The recent by-election in Victoria also showed change is in the air.
As with any change for the better, new ways of thinking and acting are necessary. Carbon pricing and carbon taxation will need to be part of a paradigm shift to change our thinking and behaviours to reduce damaging environmental emissions.
What's been absent so far, while additional tax burdens are imposed on Canadians, is a comprehensive and integrated approach that does not simply increase the taxation burden on Canadians, but strives to balance and shift the taxation equation to a more progressive approach where sustainable business practices are given more support and preferential tax treatment. We can enjoy the services of government we've come to expect and rely upon without sacrificing our communities to the destruction of climate change. It would be unfortunate to leave some pondering never enjoying having a family simply because of poor government leadership. The economy and government needs to work for us, not the other way around.
Many business students are making a difference every day by embracing green opportunities in a variety of industries. The future is bright. These emerging business leaders are the same people helping build the growing green political voice. Be part of the future this spring. Get involved and most importantly, get out and vote.
