Re: "Ads attack ethics," Opinion, Nov. 30. Although this note is late, I want to comment on the editorial about the attack ads on NDP leader Thomas Mulcair.
I have become so used to most of the media turning a blind eye to political happenings, it was astonishing to read your comments on the truth behind this Conservative slander.
You have redeemed my faith in modern journalism. The position an independent and truthful press holds within our society is vital to its well being. Without it, the press becomes the propaganda arm of whatever agency can afford to buy it.
As you said so well, Mr. Mulcair never advocated a carbon tax, and yet the Conservatives continued to state this over and over, knowing it was a lie. The fact that this lie continued for so long shows the lack of truth in their advertising does not bother them.
Such an attitude brings to mind Joseph Goebbel's statement that "if you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will come to believe it." Has politics come to this in Canada?
Keep up the good work. I look forward to reading more unbiased truth in your newspaper.
