The Editor,
I have been a resident of Steveston for almost 20 years, and since 2006 I have actively lobbied for change to the intersection of Moncton Street and No.1 Road.
In my original letter and phone call to the city and local newspapers in March 2006, I presented the option of a pedestrian scramble.
Having lived in Tokyo, I had experienced the security of pedestrian scrambles in unique intersections where there was heavy pedestrian traffic.
In November 2008 I wrote to the city and newspapers again after a mom and daughter were struck by a car at this Steveston intersection.
This time I did get a response from the city and subsequently there was a public forum at the Steveston Community Centre in 2009.
Here, I proposed this type of traffic solution again. Yesterday while walking through the village I was very happy to see that my vision has become a reality.
I would like to think that the city did validate my proposal, and maybe similar proposals from others.
I would like to thank everyone involved for improving the safety of our community.
