A Richmond News reader wonders which charities will benefit from MP-elect's decision to donate city council salary.

A letter writer questions MP-elect Chak Au's decision to stay on as a Richmond city councillor.

Dear Editor,

Re: “Richmond MP-elect Chak Au to stay on as city councillor

While Chak Au uses the cost of a byelection as rationale to retain his seat on council, it seems to me that he will be in a position to donate taxpayers' money to charities of his choice and take the tax deductions personally for these donations.

So, in effect, taxpayers' money will go to charities that they might not have chosen to donate to and he will get the tax deductions.

And now taxpayers will be paying for both his municipal and federal expenses.

Apart from that, Richmond has numerous on-going crises - we need councillors who are focused on our community.

It is unrealistic to believe he will be able to fight for our city on a municipal level while competing with all other cities and provinces for support on a federal level.

Which one will be neglected?

I truly hope he will reconsider this decision. This is not in the best interest of the taxpayers of Richmond.

Editor's note: Chak Au has told the News that he'll provide a list of the charities he donates to at the end of the year.
