The strongest claim I can make to be a tiny branch of the Richmond farmers' family tree is that since 1978 I have been living in Richmond.
My children grew up in Richmond. My wife has worked in Richmond for more than 30 years. We consume the water and produce of Richmond.
I tend to a small backyard garden in Richmond, and we pay our taxes to the local government of Richmond. So, despite the weakness of my claim to be one of the Richmond farmers, I strongly feel their grief, frustration, anger and reasons for protest.
Their protest being health-based, I strongly support it. Contamination of soil equals contamination of produce, which equals contamination of health. If we wish to keep Richmond the healthiest city in Canada, we must pay attention to our farmers concerns; they are serious.
