Despite having a few neighbours likely bound for qualification, North Shore residents are divided on whether to take in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

Between COVID-19, China's human rights record and geopolitical tensions between Canada and China, the Games have been more controversial this time around than usual.

The North Shore News polled 1,134 people and asked the question: Do you plan to boycott Beijing's 2022 winter Olympics?

The poll ran from Dec. 9 to 30. Of the 1,134 votes, we can determine that 441 are from within the community. The full results are as follows:

I will be personally boycotting these Olympics because of China's human rights record. 34.47 % local, 36.95 % total
I support diplomatic boycotts but I will be watching and cheering for our athletes. 38.10 % local, 33.77 % total
I don't support any boycott of the Olympics. 8.84 % local, 9.35 % total
I never watch the Olympics anyways. 18.59 % local, 19.93 % total

Although they were initially told they could go, NHL players have recently learned the league will not allow them to travel to Beijing.

Results are based on an online study of adult North Shore News readers that are located in North Vancouver and West Vancouver. The margin of error - which measures sample variability - is +/- 2.9%, 19 times out of 20.
