No benefits to Kits closure

I am in utter disbelief that Greg Miller, representing the RCMSAR (Ex Coast Guard Auxiliary) can be so out of touch to tell your safety committee that the closing of the Kitsilano Coast Guard Station "may even benefit" the residents of Richmond.

Richmond has enjoyed the benefit of having a 24-hour a day rescue hovercraft that has reliably served the shallow waters around Sea Island since the late 1960s.

When the Conservative government closes Kitsilano base next year, it will mean the hovercraft will be spending a lot more of its time in Vancouver Harbour and Howe Sound where the Kitsilano 41' Rescue boat traditionally operates, not in Richmond. Tell me, how does that benefit you?

The RCMSAR (auxiliary) doesn't have an amphibious vehicle and will not be able to assist aircraft, persons or boats that are stranded on the sand and mud, which probably makes up about 50 per cent of your island.

If Kitsilano closes, YVR, Richmond and any mariners west of Richmond all lose as a result. Miller admits in your article that they are understaffed and all he sees in my opinion is more dollars for them, which doesn't benefit anyone who is in trouble in your shallows.
