Letter: What value placed on trees?

Dear Editor, I have yet to receive a response from staff about my suggestion that a tree canopy study be done for Richmond, showing the changes over the last five to 10 years in particular.

Dear Editor,

I have yet to receive a response from staff about my suggestion that a tree canopy study be done for Richmond, showing the changes over the last five to 10 years in particular. If the three tree protection staff and the sustainability staff do not have the time, surely a student could be hired and would complete the job in a month. This will give some facts for council to base decisions on going forward.

It seems that the demolition of our neighbourhoods is speeding up. For an example of this, please visit Pelican Court, off Kittiwake Drive, in Westwind. I understand from an original owner of 44 years that most of the older homes in this cul de sac are for sale or sold. There are still many trees, but for how long?

I cannot understand a city council that is content to preside over the systematic destruction of trees, green space and in the end, neighbourhoods.

As Oscar Wilde famously said, “Nowadays people know the price of everything and the value of nothing.”
