Letter: Tree planting not enough

Dear Editor, Every day I see more houses demolished and more new construction begin. Much of the demolished material ends up in the landfill; most of the lumber for construction comes (I believe) from our forests.

Dear Editor,

Every day I see more houses demolished and more new construction begin. Much of the demolished material ends up in the landfill; most of the lumber for construction comes (I believe) from our forests.

Our landfills are growing to a gargantuan size at a dangerously fast pace. Does that mean the shrinking of our forests is happening on the same scale and at the same pace?

It takes longer for a tree to grow than it does for a tree to be cut down and turned into lumber. Planting replacement trees isn’t going to solve the problem.

Halting the mad race to build more and bigger houses would be an effective step towards a solution.
