Dear Editor:

Kudos to our new council who just voted to restrict housing sizes to approximately 4,000 square feet, which is below provincial guidelines!

At the council meeting Monday, I was heartened to see a turn-around on this issue by Couns. Chak Au and Bill McNulty. It was a wonderful surprise to see these two councillors, who had previously voted against this kind of restriction, actually change their minds and vote for what is best for Richmond’s farmland.

This issue has taken up the better part of the last two years in our city. I think we need to remember who really started the campaign to restrict housing sizes on ALR land. It was Jack Trovato, a recent RCA candidate, who started both a paper petition and an online petition demanding that council create bylaws to restrict housing sizes.

These petitions gathered a total of 7,000 signatures, a testament to Jack’s organizing ability and his willingness to knock on doors throughout summer and fall.

The issue was also a popular topic with voters Jack met during the civic campaign.

Jack has put in an incredible number of hours talking to people, getting them to sign the petition and making presentations to city council on this issue. I just want to thank him for everything he has done to get us where we are today. I don’t think we would have been as successful if he hadn’t taken the lead on this.

A huge thank you to Jack and our new city council!
