Letter: Steveston laneway decision seems sneaky

Dear Editor,

Re: “Clear a path, we’re coming through,” News, Dec. 1.

I am shocked and extremely disappointed with the approach the City of Richmond is taking to address the replacement of the sewer system in Steveston.

What happened to defending what’s best for your residents? And what’s reasonable use of our tax dollars? I’ve turned a blind eye to many things this city has done, but this is crossing a line.

With the exception of taking a hiatus in Alberta during my 20s, I’m a life-long Richmond resident. I take pride in my city. When it came to starting a family, my husband and I chose Steveston as we really liked the quaint neighborhood, nearby parks, and minimal monster homes. It feels like a neighborhood — kids playing on the street, people out gardening, etc. We saw past the electrical posts, ditches and lack of sidewalks, and took in the beauty and fresh sea air. After almost seven years residing here, I can genuinely say I love where I live.

Until now.

I’m completely dumbfounded our city council had a closed-door meeting and little consultation with residents before approving this work. I get that the sewers need to be replaced. I’m very grateful to live in a place where these types of issues are addressed.

But why are laneways being paved? What is the purpose? Easy access? Isn’t it more challenging to dig up concrete? A vast majority of homes in Steveston have garages with doors facing the street so it certainly doesn’t benefit those who live in the affected areas.

There is absolutely no need to pave these lanes. What disappoints me even more is that the beautiful big trees are being pulled out. It’s sickening. How about we focus on paving sidewalks or filling some ditches?

Clearly our beloved mayor does not live in Steveston or these repairs wouldn’t have been so sneakily approved.
