Letters: Why are Richmond taxes going up even with all the construction?

Quality of life has gone down over the past few decades, says letter writer.

Dear Editor,

Re: "Average property tax increase in Richmond pegged at $116 next year," Nov. 27

Perhaps it is too simple and I am uneducated when it comes to politics, but how and why would property taxes increase when all we keep doing is building more condos, townhouses and increasing the population of Richmond?

I have lived here for 55 years and the quality of life has gone down the toilet.

Richmond was a great place to grow up but those days are long gone.

I always ask "why do we want more people "?

If making our city more crowded, traffic nightmares everywhere, and no real estate reasonably affordable for our kids, doesn't lower our taxes, why in the world would we destroy our city and lifestyle?

Again, I apologize for my ignorance, but I really don't get it.

Somebody, please, give me a reasonable response, because Richmond's quality of living is nowhere close to what it was 20 or 30 years ago.
