Letters: Steveston storage facility must not go ahead

A Richmond News reader is calling into question the proposed storage facility at the foot of No. 2 Road

Local residents are dead-set against the building of a storage facility near this site on No. 2 Road

Dear Editor,

We, the concerned residents of Steveston, are writing this letter to express our outrage and opposition to the proposed construction of a large concrete storage facility on our beloved waterfront.

This development, driven by greed and disregard for our community, threatens our heritage site, fragile wildlife, and the safety and well-being of our residents, particularly our young children.

Steveston is a booming residential area cherished for its natural beauty, where families take leisurely walks, children bike to school, and residents enjoy various outdoor activities.

It is a haven for wildlife, including a bird sanctuary, which we must protect for future generations. Introducing a 24/7 lit up storage facility would irreversibly disrupt the tranquility and charm that makes Steveston so desirable.

We urge Jim Pattison, a billionaire developer, to reconsider his plans. Rather than contributing to the destruction of our community, we implore him to contribute positively to our neighborhood’s development.

Why not donate a park, create green spaces, promote more affordable living, establish restaurants, shops, and provide essential amenities such as childcare facilities?

These initiatives would enhance the quality of life for young families and retirees alike, fostering a sense of community and preserving the natural beauty that attracts so many to Steveston.

Furthermore, we call upon our politicians to intervene and protect our community’s best interests. The proposed storage facility not only threatens our heritage and wildlife but also poses risks to the fragile infrastructure that cannot accommodate heavy trucks and industrial transport.

Our roads are not designed to withstand the constant influx of such vehicles, endangering the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, and residents alike.

We understand the importance of economic development and hosting events in our city.

However, this particular development proposal crosses a line. Steveston’s unique character and significance demand special protection. It is time for our city councillors to champion positive growth, rather than reverting to outdated plans and regulations.

We implore you to reassess the situation, take decisive action, and preserve our community’s integrity.

Lastly, we direct our plea to Jim Pattison and his business developers. We understand that your primary concern is profit and activity, but we implore you to consider the profound impact this development would have on Steveston.

Please understand that the residents of this community value its heritage, nature, and the well-being of its residents far more than any short-term gains. We ask you to respect our collective voice and our vision for a sustainable, harmonious Steveston.

In conclusion, we call upon our politicians to reject this development proposal immediately. Jim Pattison, we beseech you to relocate your concrete storage facility to an industrial area in eastern Richmond, away from our residential heritage fishing village.

Let us put an end to this cycle of greed and prioritize the preservation and prosperity of our community. Together, we can create a legacy that future generations will be proud of.
