Letters: Off-leash dogs in Richmond can net heavy fines

Letter writer said large dog in on-leash park made her fall down.

Dear Editor,

Welcome to Richmond’s newest off-leash dog park!

Did you hear? Or should I say, did you see all the huge dogs happily running free all over Blundell Park ?

Some with no owner visible!

Today I was walking my well-behaved dog in this park off Blundell Road and No. 2 Road when suddenly this massive-sized dog came meandering along slowly approaching us.

Even if the dog’s intention was friendly, my dog does not know your dog or you.

My dog tensed up ready to protect his Mom, but just as the strange dog was ready to test his wits with my dog, I fell into a muddy mess of leaves.

I insisted the other dog owner immediately leash her dog and just leave, telling her she is lucky I’m not hurt! She kept standing there with her huge dog.

I insisted that she do herself a favour and leave and know that having a dog off leash can net a fine up to $175.

This is really getting out of hand! If you think it’s cute for dogs to be off leash meeting and greeting in an on-leash park you are wrong.

Go to an off-leash park instead where the pet owners are mentally and physically prepared for whatever happens.

So, if nothing is done about this, then the city may as well change the signs to off-leash park.
