Letters: Nothing is free

A Richmond News reader says electricity demand is growing and people using EV charging stations should be paying.

The Richmond Hospital installing six 30 EV charging stations (free to charge). The City of Richmond has 46 EV charging ports that now have hourly fees. Both BC Hydro and FortisBC will be installing Level 3 DC Fast Charging Stations whose charging rates and costs may be subsidized by their ratepayers as permitted by the Clean Energy Act sec. 18(2). These EVs escape the BC Fuel (Road) Tax as electricity is not considered a fuel. BC Hydro offers option number three to install a separate meter in a strata complex to charge your EV. Yes, continued growth in electricity demand may impact the distribution grid. Yes, the taxpayers and ratepayers are being told that they have to subsidize the fuel cost of those who can afford to drive EVs that have been subsidized by the taxpayers. Nothing is free; we all pay for these stations and EVs. So wake up and smell the coffee.
