A Richmond News reader says the government's designated hotel policy has left employees powerless to negotiate.

Dear Editor,

Re: “Mixed fortunes for Richmond hotel workers,” Richmond-News.com, Sept. 14.

As a COVID designated hotel, the hotel is paid $120 for every room, whether it is occupied or not.

With 388 rooms, that adds up to quite a nice profit for the owner.

As long as the government continues to use the Pacific Gateway Hotel for this purpose, the hotel will remain closed to the public.

Therefore, the owner has no need to negotiate, or offer any employee their job back.

As a result, it is actually the government contract that has crippled us, leaving the employees powerless to negotiate.
