Dear Editor,

Mental health is extremely important in everyone’s daily lives because it is what keeps us focused on our lives, dreams and people we love.

Some people may put mental health aside, but if we ignore its significance, the values in our daily lives will decrease.

Throughout the pandemic I have tried to prioritize my physical, mental and emotional health because I know I’m vulnerable. I have been eating better, running with my dad and  playing board games with my family.

During the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Simone Biles, an American gymnast, dropped out of the finals due to her mental health. The courage she showed in that decision demonstrates how she prioritizes mental health and believes that having a positive attitude towards the sport can allow you to enjoy it, rather than being pessimistic and overwhelmed by the pressure on your shoulders.

“I have to do what’s right for me and focus on my mental health, and not jeopardize my health and well-being,” is how she explained it.

Simone Biles is an excellent role model because she shows the world that mental health defeats the biggest things like winning a medal at the Olympics.

Furthermore, we need to recognize that staying healthy and being happy can change and make your life better, as you create positive values and goals for the future.
