Dear Editor,
I am writing to address the misinformation circulating regarding the proposed affordable housing development at 4831 Steveston Highway.
It is disheartening to see the spread of false statements causing unnecessary controversy.
Contrary to some claims, this housing project is not a recovery house and will not include supervised drug consumption.
Instead, it aims to provide 25 new affordable housing units for women and children.
According to the City of Richmond, the development will comprise 15 studios and ten two-bedroom units.
While most residents are not expected to own cars, parking space for 11 vehicles on the premises will be available.
Turning Point Housing Society, an experienced housing provider in Richmond for decades will oversee the operations to ensure the smooth management of these affordable housing units.
They have a proven track record of successfully managing similar projects.
The City of Richmond chose this site due to its availability as city-owned land, convenient bus route access, and existing multifamily housing zoning in the Official Community Plan.
The funding of 9.1 million dollars provided by the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation necessitates timely construction and occupancy by October 2024.
Given the scarcity of land in Richmond and the high demand for housing, densification along arterial roads like Steveston Highway has been practiced for some time.
Let us dispel the misinformation and embrace this opportunity to support affordable housing for women and children.
Together, we can create a caring community that provides stability and support to its most vulnerable members.
