Letters: Enforcement needed for Steveston sandwich board scofflaws

A Richmond News reader suggests bringing back wood-engraved signs on streetlights.

Sandwich boards are on display in Steveston. One councillor is going to ask to revisit a ban on them.

Dear Editor,

Re: "Sandwich boards in Richmond proliferate despite bylaw banning them"

I am shocked that sidewalk signs have been allowed to remain an issue in Steveston for so long.

With the return of poor weather, these unsecured signs will only become a greater problem.

In the past, they’ve made sidewalks difficult to navigate, especially for those with mobility issues. The bylaw to regulate them exists but isn’t being enforced.

Years ago, Steveston Village had beautiful wood-engraved signs hanging from streetlight stands at the corners, showcasing the stores on each block. Reintroducing something like this would solve the problem entirely.

Coun. Laura Gillanders recently stated that “an outright ban isn’t working.” Of course it isn’t—it’s not being enforced! We need a centralized system that ensures signage is properly displayed, without obstructing our sidewalks.

It’s essential that we prioritize accessibility for everyone in our community.

Steveston should be a place where all residents and visitors, regardless of their mobility, can get around safely and enjoy our beautiful village without barriers.
