Letters: Cleanup crews in Richmond ‘unsung heroes’

The Editor,

I have just returned from one of my regular walks along the South Dyke trail and was delighted to discover that certain sections of it have been resurfaced, particularly by the Crown Packaging plant near Finn Road.

Now, instead of having to slalom through slippery mud and puddles, we have a beautifully groomed gravel pathway to walk on!

I want to give a big shoutout to all our city works crews who work so hard behind the scenes to beautify and improve our neighbourhoods, not just through trail maintenance, but by planting colourful borders and medians, and undertaking the totally thankless task of cleaning up the garbage.

Unfortunately, many citizens are not getting the message about discarding masks, wipes and gloves properly, not to mention all the other litter strewn along paths and roads.

Don’t they realize some poor souls are going to have to clean up after them and deal with their thoughtlessness?

I think these unsung heroes deserve grateful thanks and recognition from us all.

Perhaps, when we next encounter one of them on our travels around the city, we could give them a big smile  — yes, even from behind a mask! — a wave and a word of thanks.

That would go a long way to helping them feel appreciated for all that they do for us.
