The Editor,

As a commercial pilot flying in and out of YVR and a long time resident of Richmond, I am happy to hear the airport outlet is hiring and feeling confident about its future.

The success of this outlet means jobs for Richmond, and jobs in the airline industry as more people and goods are moved via YVR and Richmond.

This highlights the necessity of a close and productive relationship between the airport and the city.

While the relationship has not always been perfect, I believe the city and the airport should work together and leverage each other’s strengths.

The city and the airport must see each other as equal partners — Richmond needs the airport as much as the airport needs Richmond. If we work together, everybody wins.

Just like former U.S. President John F. Kennedy said when describing Canada/U.S. relations, the same can be said about Richmond and YVR: “Geography has made us neighbours… economics has made us partners, and necessity has made us allies.” Richmond has a unique relationship with YVR, and the closer we work together, the better it will be for everyone.
