Dear Editor,
Re: “Grocery store option coming to Steveston?” News, Oct. 21.
As a resident who has been living in Richmond for more than 43 years, I have a voice and a vote. We definitely do not need another grocery store in Steveston. What we do need is an open air farm market like Granville Island or Pike Place Market in Seattle. This would be very economical, as well as beneficial for our community.
One, this type of market would provide an income to anyone wishing to sell their produce, specialty items and crafts. This would put money into the pockets of everyone selling their products, not just lining the pockets of city council.
Two, this type of market would preserve and protect the atmosphere of the village of Steveston and provide farmers, fishermen, artisans and small businesses a place to market their products.
Three, it would be a community market where families can spend the day and it’s a great way of getting the kids involved.
Four, it would be a great place for tourists and locals to visit as they can see what Steveston has to offer.
Five, this market can only boost the other local businesses in Steveston as people will buy locally and support the local economy and connect with our community.
Leave our Steveston the village it should be and not make it what it doesn’t need to be. We don’t need any more congestion and grid-locked traffic that has become Richmond’s chaos and clutter.
