Dear Editor,

On Sunday, Sept. 18, more than 400 participants and volunteers came out on a beautiful morning to participate in the 36th annual Terry Fox Run at Garry Point Park.

I am pleased to announce that through the efforts of these wonderful people, a total of $19,500 was raised for cancer research.

This event could not have been the success it was without the efforts of an engaged and committed group of volunteers.

These individuals who have dedicated themselves year after year to making the Terry Fox Run a success are truly remarkable, and I thank them for their hard work.

Volunteering with us again this year were the enthusiastic and helpful students from the Grade 12 Leadership Program at McMath secondary.

I would also like to thank our many supporters that contributed various goods and services.

These include City of Richmond-Parks and Recreation, Culligan Water, PriceSmart Foods, Re/Max, Richmond Emergency Program Amateur Radio Society, Rotary-E Club of Lulu Island, St. John Ambulance, Safeway and Save on Foods.

Through their generosity we ensure that all monies raised go directly to The Terry Fox Foundation to fund innovative cancer research.

Music was generously provided by The Royal Canadian Sea Cadets Bicknell Band, together with the traditional Flag Party.  The returning participants were greeted by the drumbeats of the Tetsu Taiko Drummers.

We were very excited this year to have a special guest join us, Olympian Evan Dunfee.

In his remarks, he spoke of how Terry Fox has inspired him.

Not only did Evan address the crowd, but he also race walked the course as he did in the Olympics in Rio earlier this summer with a number of young runners.  What a thrill it must have been for these kids!

Lastly, I want to thank all the participants.

Without each and every one of you, the Terry Fox Run would not be what it is today.

Terry said, “It’s got to keep going without me.” And yesterday, together with hundreds of thousands of people across Canada, we did just that.
