Letter: Thanks to our Richmond gang-busters

Scouts

Dear Editor,

I would like to take a moment to thank all the volunteers that make Sea, Army and Air Cadets possible.

I would also like to thank all Scout and Guide leaders and all soccer, baseball, skating and any other kind of coach, including marital arts.

I guess I just want to say that a kid on a day-long hike or running around a soccer pitch or spending an hour on a parade square is not joining a gang.

Kids need to belong and they need a sense of accomplishment. They need a good reason to be proud of themselves.

We as parents can only do so much, and the schools alone cannot do it.

I chuckle to think of a woman running a Cub Scout troop, leading the fight against gangs; but that is exactly what they are doing!

You can hire all the police you want and run around fighting the gangs, but the solution is to prevent the disease before it starts.

It is cheaper, more effective and better for society to support kids now rather than later.

Thanks again to the real gang-busters; you know who you are.

Scott Stewart
