Dear Editor,
A couple of weeks ago, St. Alban Church had an event inviting all homeless folks to come and meet with professionals.
There were doctors, mechanics, people from the social service sector — even a portrait photographer.
Folks were fed, given clothes, a haircut and a chance to seek help.
Saint Alban also runs a shower program for homeless folks, so once a week they can come in and get cleaned up.
St. Alban is a small church with a great history of community involvement, but it is struggling to stay afloat these days. Regardless, its members still reach out.
There were some local and provincial politicians at the event.
They saw, and had the opportunity to meet, the homeless folks, so now they know they are out there, but what is the city doing to help the homeless?
I waited to see if any of the politicians would put something in this paper about their plans or accomplishments with respect to this issue, but I’ve seen nothing.
I have been told that the City of Richmond has money slated for helping the homeless.
What are they waiting for?
We are moving into a wet, cold winter, it is past time to get something started.
To leave on a positive note, when it gets really cold, the church will open its doors to help.
They always do.
