Letter: Term limits? Yes. Age limits? No

Dear Editor: Re: “Term limit for council?” Letters, May 12. I couldn’t agree more with most of Mel Goodwin’s letter in the Richmond News. I say most because I don’t agree with the age limit of 70.

Coun. Bill McNulty is hoping the abandoned pilings, in the background, at Garry Point, can be used in a bid to build a new pier that could welcome deep draft tall ships to the city during Canada’s 150th anniversary celebrations in 2017.

Dear Editor:

Re: “Term limit for council?” Letters, May 12.

I couldn’t agree more with most of Mel Goodwin’s letter in the Richmond News.

I say most because I don’t agree with the age limit of 70. Being a 70-year-old myself, I do not subscribe to the idea that all 70-year-olds would be incapable of doing a good job as a city council member. Some of us have more ingenuity and creativity, not to mention common sense, than many 40-year-olds, or younger.

I do agree, however, with a consecutive term limit. Two or three terms, consecutively, should be enough. Should an ex-council member choose to run for office again after a break of a yet-to-be-determined period of time, this might be acceptable to the Richmond public.

Mr. Goodwin asked for support on this issue. He has mine, but how do we move forward with this? A referendum?

Council isn’t likely to volunteer to vote in such a constraint upon themselves without serious encouragement, to put it as kindly as possible.

I look forward to hearing more on this subject.
