Dear Editor,
I was very surprised to receive a 10.5 per cent increase in our property taxes.
I look around Richmond and see 20, new highrises in the centre of the city. I also see a dozen cranes constructing more buildings. As I travel around the residential and farming areas, I see dozens of new multi-million dollar homes and many more under construction.
Surely, I thought, the tax collector would be receiving a river of new tax dollars that he/she would be hard-pressed to spend. Apparently, not so.
The ever-expanding wish list at city hall is fully capable of dealing with new and old tax revenue, and then some. The information that came with my tax bill was of little help in showing the increases in spending.
As a fiscal conservative, I am very troubled by the rate of my tax increase. Is there any local elected person looking at tax increases? If so, please tell me to help me mark my ballot.
