Dear Editor,
Re: “Residents chip in over homeless housing,” News, March 1.
According to the response seen last Wednesday at the Brighouse library, there was more than a little interest over the news sprung on us by our city council of 40 rooms for the homeless situated next door to a liquor store, pub, hotels and a well-ordered neighbourhood. Maybe some good reason for raised emotions and a lot of questions?
Richmond city council, maybe, just maybe, could have done some surveys before telling good citizens this is what, when and where this controversial place will launch its efforts to house the homeless.
I don’t think Richmond is to resemble Russia or North Korea in handing surprises to citizens who have elected them regarding weighty social impacting issues. Having said this, we know mistakes can be made in rushing ahead without proper consultation and process. However, when recognized, let’s apologize, slow down and follow a path of due diligence. This we would hope for from a council seeking re-election.
Most of our citizens reacting are not saying no to helping the homeless. Rather, our fine taxpayers and socially-conscious citizens are wanting to see all the options explored. One short emergency shot at it in our library will not achieve that.
I appeal to our mayor and council to take a step back, listen and gather all the wisdom needed to do what needs to be done to achieve care for the homeless as well as those responsible citizens who make Richmond a great community.
