An artists's rendering of the George Massey Tunnel bridge replacement

Dear Editor,

As a Richmond-White Rock commuter, I’d like to comment on the proposed new bridge that will replace the Massey Tunnel.

In addition to its huge cost and environmental impact, one problem with the newly proposed bridge is its location.

Constructing a crossing point at exactly the same spot as the Massey Tunnel does not address the bottleneck into Vancouver.

Commuters need an alternative route into the city so wouldn’t it make more sense to build a new crossing at a totally different site, say at No. 2 Road for example? I’m no cartographer or engineer, but if you look at the map, anyone can see a better way to alleviate congestion --— extend No. 2 Road across the river into South Delta, which would service people to Ladner, Tsawwassen and the ferries and gradually upgrade the Massey Tunnel for people traveling to and from South Surrey, White Rock and the US.

Traffic flow could continue uninterrupted as this was being implemented.

Has this ever been considered?
