Dear Editor,

In a recent edition of the Richmond News, there was a paid advertisement by a group calling themselves Better Richmond Concern Group. They took to task Chak Au, a member of city council who is running in the upcoming provincial election as an NDP representative. They pointed out that the NDP supports, amongst other things, gay marriage.

I hate to break it to the Better Richmond Concern Group, but all of our political parties, provincially and federally, support gay marriage. And not a single one is advocating we turn back the clock on equal rights for this demographic.

Gay marriage was legally recognized in this province in 2003, under the BC Liberal government. In 2005, the federal Liberals introduced the Civil Marriage Act, which was approved by the House of Commons and the Senate. After the following election, the federal Conservatives reaffirmed the legislation.

As the first country outside of Europe to recognize gay marriage, it was a proud moment in Canada’s history. It made this country, this province, and the City of Richmond, better.
