Letter: Site C? No thanks

Site C Dam
Site C dam is just one of the megaprojects that the BC LIberals and BC NDP both support.

Open letter to the BC NDP government,

The fate of the Site C dam is now in the hands of the new BCNDP government.

They must do the right thing and cancel this white elephant of a project.

British Columbians cannot afford this hugely expensive mistake. Here are some reasons why the dam would have disastrous long-term consequences for B.C.:

-Since B.C. doesn’t need the power, it would be sold at a loss. Cancelling Site C would represent huge cost savings for ratepayers.

-Site C would add between $10 billion and $12.5 billion to BC Hydro’s already large debt, which will be paid for by British Columbians.

-Moody’s Investor Service has noted that the increase in debt at BC Hydro will impact the province’s credit rating.

-Wind, solar, geothermal and energy conservation create better long-term jobs and offer a much cheaper solution for addressing BC’s future energy needs than Site C.

-Treaty 8 First Nations have the right to use the Peace River Valley for hunting, fishing and cultural purposes. Site C tramples on these rights.

-The Peace Valley is prime agricultural land. The biggest-ever exclusion from the ALR was made for Site C.

So, let’s make the right decision that makes life more affordable for British Columbians, not less. It is not too late to stop the Site C dam.
