Dear Editor,

Re: “Tax hike alarming,” Letters, News, June 16, 2017.

I noted one letter of complaint concerning increased property taxes. The amount was similar to ours — close to $5,500.

Up until now, we had been given a disability grant, and this year my husband turned 65. Because of the outrageous increase in the assessment of the land our house sits on, we get no grant at all. We’re still disabled, and now one of us is retired.

How can this be justified? Why are we all accepting this?

Next year, I will appeal the assessment, but the unfairness of this year’s taxes appalls me. Offshore investment in housing is costing local residents too dearly.
