Dear Editor,

Re: “Familiar face leads schools,” News, Feb. 21, 2019

It is with mixed emotions that the Board of Education announces the retirement of our superintendent, Sherry Elwood, effective March 31, and the hiring of Scott Robinson as our new superintendent, effective April 1.

Sherry Elwood’s career in public education spans over 36 years and has included a vast variety of roles including teacher, school administrator, assistant superintendent as well as Superintendent of Schools in two B.C. school districts.

In each of her roles, she has been characterized as passionate about public education, courageous and determined.  In all interactions, she has modelled a relentless dedication to keeping what is best for students at the heart of every discussion and every decision.

Superintendent Elwood has helped guide the district through some difficult issues such as school closures, seismic upgrading and the development of our SOGI Policy.

Her ability to make difficult decisions while maintaining the integrity of our district and respect to others are examples of her exceptional leadership skills.

Sherry Elwood Superintendent of Schools at the Richmond School District. May 2016.

To the Board of Education, she is a trusted and loyal employee.  To her colleagues and staff, she is a respected and passionate leader.  And to all, she’s just a very nice person.

Scott Robinson has been an educator for the past 27 years.  He is no stranger to our district having previously worked with us as an assistant superintendent seven years ago.  In conversations with many district staff, there was excitement and delight when it was announced that Scott would be returning as our new deputy superintendent last year.  The respect he has earned and the popularity he has gained can best be explained by an answer he gave in a past interview to a news reporter.

I’m a firm believer in the power of relationships — authentic relationships, being yourself and allowing the people you work with and work for to be themselves.

I believe strongly in finding the best in everybody you encounter and that you can learn something from everyone you encounter (Vancouver Sun – Feb/2015)

The Board of Education is grateful for all that superintendent Elwood has done for our district.  We are also pleased, that incoming superintendent Robinson will be the one leading us into the next phase of our district’s growth and development.  It is an exciting time.

In closing, we wish Sherry Elwood and Scott Robinson the very best in their new endeavors.

Ken Hamaguchi, board chair, on behalf of the Richmond Board of Education
